2019 New Year’s Resolutions for the Modern Workforce

January 02, 2019 by Amanda Maksymiw

The holidays are wrapped up and the New Year is upon us. Queue the gym memberships, healthy eating initiatives, personal budgeting, and all of those things we resolve (with varying degrees of success) to change in our lives, as another year offers us a fresh start and new opportunity for improvement.

As you think about the goals you’ll be setting for 2019, consider these ideas as ways to elevate your work productivity.

Be Flexible

Sometimes as we look ahead, we have a desire to plan every detail to remove uncertainty and  to remain prepared for whatever life may throw at us. But in doing so, we risk becoming tethered by static limitations of our own creation. It is inevitable that new projects and requests will arise and will force you to shift plans or make changes that you did not anticipate. For example, think of a scenario where a new and urgent priority arises while you’re in transit from one location to another. Changing your timing and plans would require significant effort and the need to offset other priorities, but handling the new priority immediately will save your team a mountain of work and stress. Being overly tied to set plans in such a situation can halt a team’s productivity and cause the loss of valuable time. The modern workforce is fast paced and full of activity, so being able to go with the flow and remain flexible in any situation is an essential quality for success.

Travel Freely and Work Remotely

With today’s technologies, we can always be advancing projects no matter where or when we’re working. Travel no longer has to be limited to vacation time and holidays, as team members are able to seamlessly communicate with each other using solutions like Fuze and can accomplish team projects and goals no matter where they are. With this in mind, workers should feel empowered to travel while working when it makes sense for their teams. This year, consider  requesting to work remotely in someplace you’ve always wanted to visit. For business leaders, this means making your employees feel comfortable with such requests, and equipping them the tools they need to unleash their productivity regardless of location. With 79% of workers wanting to work outside of the company in some capacity, promoting and encouraging remote work is not just good culture, but good business.

Increase Face-to-Face Time

Email, calls, and messages are still the pillars of today’s collaboration tools. They allow us to communicate with one another across vast distances and are vital to the work that we all do. But it is undeniable that certain things are lost in translation when we communicate over these mediums. As human beings, we are naturally inclined to communicate through facial expressions. They help us to understand one another and provide meaning that text or voices alone cannot convey. So this year, when you’re getting ready for a conference call or just communicating with a colleague, turn on your video. You’ll find that your conversations become more productive and efficient as you are able to express yourself as clearly as possible. Additionally, your co-workers will feel more connected to you, forging lasting bonds that will increase the cohesion of your team.

We here at Fuze wish you a Happy New Year, and hope these tips will help guide you to new heights of productivity in 2019!
