Spring Cleaning Your Tech Apps

Workforce communication has changed dramatically in the past month. With the arrival of spring, the challenges of adapting to remote work became fast realities for enterprises across all industries. As more and more employees are working from home, IT leaders everywhere are being put to the ultimate test: Do we have the tools needed to support workforce productivity in this new normal? 


While grappling with this question, however, some IT departments may realize they are working with more disparate tools than they need. In fact, in working closely with our customers, we often find that many enterprises utilize upwards of six tools across their organizations at once. As a quick-fix in some cases, this creates a natural disconnect in cross-departmental communications in which many organizations do not consider the long-term impacts. 


Because we believe unified communications tools are critical to streamlining business operations, here are three quick tips to streamline your tech apps. 


1. Take note of inventory 


The recent wide scale adoption of remote work mandates that every organization must lean on some sort of collaboration tools to continue business operations and communications in a distributed environment. Teams still need the ability to chat throughout the day outside of scheduled meetings, engage in video meetings for brainstorm sessions and jump on quick calls to connect on projects. Aside from these critical capabilities, other essentials can include needs like the right solutions for reliable communication security or convenience like content sharing during meetings. 


After tallying up each of these tools, however, IT leaders may come to find that the use of multiple apps for every capability is clouding true connectivity in a time where it is imperative for workforce productivity. Looking across the stack of apps in use across an organization will not only help to take an inventory of the current tools used most often, but will support IT leaders in prioritizing which tools are necessary and which can be combined.


2. Consolidate the necessities  


The implementation of communication tools within an organization will look different in many scenarios. Widespread implementation is effective in touching all corners of an employee network and connecting every worker across an organization. Yet, there are smaller cases of implementation in which some teams or departments integrate a tool into their routines to communicate that isn’t universal to the whole organization. 


While this may have been an effective short-term solution in an in-office environment, it could cause friction at a time when the workforce is remote. Instead, rolling out tools broadly can help IT leaders make an investment in communications and collaboration technology that consolidates multiple applications and creates a central hub to connect anyone within an organization. This ensures that each worker is equipped with the tools to reach not just the business unit in which they operate, but departments outside of their day-to-day function.


3. Think about the future 


The future of true communications and collaboration tools is a unified platform. As entire workforce networks are remote, flexible work culture is only further ingrained into our day-to-day working lives. This mindset lends itself to a spread of technology that combines all communication needs — from chat to voice to video to content sharing — into a single application to streamline collaboration across an enterprise.
