IP Expo: Pre-show Q&A with Bradlee Allen, Product Evangelist

Europe’s number one enterprise IT event, IP Expo, is being held in London next week from 3rd – 4th October. The Fuze team will be available on Stand H20 throughout the event, showcasing how Fuze’s global cloud communications and collaboration platform enables the modern workforce to be at their most productive and work whenever and wherever they prefer, while ensuring businesses are prepared for the next evolution in the future of work.


During the event, Fuze’s Product Evangelist, Bradlee Allen, will also be discussing Productivity in the Digital Workplace in the UC & Collaboration theater at 11am on Wednesday, 3rd October.


We caught up with Bradlee ahead of IP Expo, where he shared some thoughts on worker expectations and the challenges that businesses face when adopting new tools to support an increasingly mobile workforce.


1. In your opinion, what trends are shaping the future of work?


The world of work is undeniably changing. The trends driving this change are shifting mindsets, diversifying workforces and new working styles. Alongside this, advancements in technologies are bringing changes at such a fast pace that many businesses are struggling to keep up with the trends.


With new generations entering the workforce, they are bringing with them new working preferences, which is creating a fundamental shift in how businesses are operating and allowing their teams to work.


One of the main trends we’re seeing is the increasingly consumer-like expectations of workers, who want business technology to work in the same way their technology at home does. Our research shows that 38 percent of workers are provided with technology that doesn’t work effectively, proving there is a real disconnect between the realities and the expectations of tech in the workplace.


2. What impact will these new challenges have on workforce productivity?


Productivity in the workplace is a precious commodity in any business. Introducing new tools for workers to learn how to use or bringing new workers into the mix with differing working approaches or styles can disrupt the ecosystem and threaten efficiency.


To avoid this, work needs to be more fluid, with business leaders encouraging every member of their team to work in the way that best suits them and facilitating this with the appropriate technology and culture. This can include anything from providing the flexibility for workers to carry out their roles where they feel most productive to choosing the hours that best suit their life to balance personal and work commitments.


Fuze’s Workforce Futures study shows that 57 percent of workers prefer a job with no set hours, so the desire for increasingly adaptable roles and working styles is clear. If businesses can adapt to these demands, staff will be more engaged and deliver their best work.


3. How can business and IT teams address the changes companies are set to face?


Demand for open office cultures, flexible working practices, and a positive work-life balance are no longer exclusive to a certain age group or generation, but are emerging across every level within the working world.


Despite the fact that the world of work is poised to transform dramatically in the next few years, many business leaders are standing in the way of this transformation. Rather than allowing employees to work in a way that maximizes their own personal productivity, too many businesses are enforcing rigid or old-fashioned restrictions on the definition of work.


At the same time, IT leaders looking to drive innovative technological change are also being held back, with many business leaders still seeing IT as little more than a cost-reduction function. IT teams need to be empowered to embrace the future of work, with technologies that create healthier working practices, provide greater freedom to collaborate, and deliver the consumer-like experiences that workers are demanding.
