Productivity @ Work, Fuze’s First Communications Index

Today we released a new report, “Productivity @ Work: The Fuze Communications Index,” the first study of its kind that takes a detailed look at how people communicate and collaborate at work. The report highlights global Fuze user data from more than five million workers including 2.5 million meetings, 20 million calls and 33 million messages from employees in Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Switzerland and the USA.

The analysis uncovers patterns in workforce productivity across age groups and geographies, revealing how employee communications and collaboration preferences are often as diverse as the workforce they support. The data also highlighted a workforce trend we know to be true: new technologies are enabling organizations to reach peak productivity by facilitating an overall cultural shift in how we work.

Additional key takeaways from the report include:

  • Video and screen share increase engagement—Video and screen share support employee engagement and meeting efficacy by reducing the opportunity for multitasking. Attendees of these types of meetings stay connected for 87 percent of the meeting time. However, only 23 percent of global respondents report that they use both video and screen share during meetings. This gap creates an opportunity for companies to build meeting cultures that improve employee engagement and productivity.

  • Peak productivity requires taking global meeting length into account—The average length of meetings with team members from one country is 19 minutes, but when adding members from an additional country, the meeting length doubles to 38 minutes. Including four or more countries triples the length of the meeting to 57 minutes. The duration of a meeting should increase for each new country added to reach maximum productivity.

  • The time of day impacts efficiency—On average, the best time to have meetings on the East Coast daily is 10:00 a.m., but for the overall week, the best time to meet is at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesdays. On the West Coast, most workers preferred a 9:00 a.m. daily meeting time but 2:00 p.m. on Thursdays for the overall week.

Enterprise leaders need to understand the unique differences across their workforce in order to best support all employees, regardless of where or when they work.
