As the number of Millennial and App Generation employees in the workforce continues to rise, companies across industries are embracing digital transformation. Our recent Breaking Barriers 2020 report found that 83 percent of workers don’t believe they need to be in the office environment to be productive and working from home appeals to 85 percent of the workforce.

 

Remote work has proven it is here to stay, however that doesn’t mean employees want less interaction and collaboration with their peers. In recent decades, advances in voice communication and messaging applications often lessoned the reliance on in-person meetings. While this type of communication can be effective, there is something to be said for the value of face time in filling the gaps. In fact, 86 percent of respondents to our Breaking Barriers survey noted face-to-face interaction will always be important.

 

Consumer apps have made video conferencing easier in recent years, but for the enterprise, it often leads to an application sprawl nightmare for IT teams to manage, track and secure multiple applications. Additionally, it can lead to clunky experiences for internal and external teams as they move from one communication to another. This is where a company-wide solution is critical to ensure video conferencing has a positive impact, be it to enable remote work or to foster a culture of collaboration.

 

What are the key elements organizations and their IT teams should keep in mind when evaluating video conferencing solutions?

 

Quality and Usability: When weighing video conferencing solutions, organizations should look for providers that offer a consistent, high-quality video and content experience across devices. Additionally, simplicity and ease-of-use are critical to fostering adoption amongst employees. Especially for App Generation and Millennials who are digital natives, it is important that these solutions are easy to use and can be taken on-the-go to allow employees to connect from anywhere.

 

Security: While organizations should look for consumer-friendly tools, security also plays a vital role in the enterprise setting. IT teams need tools that deliver centralized provisioning, management and analytics, as well as a reliable global service architecture and business-grade security. Top video conferencing software meets IT's needs and helps business owners feel confident knowing that their information is encrypted both in flight and at rest.

 

Integration: Employees are most likely to use collaboration tools that fit naturally into their daily routine, and that means they connect easily with applications they already use. When evaluating options, companies should look for solutions that can connect to applications that employees already use such as Microsoft Outlook, Google Calendar, Box, and Dropbox.

 

As remote work continues to gain popularity, video conferencing technology is critical to fostering collaboration and allowing employees to maintain that face-to-face connection.
