Workforce Futures: Building a Deeper Connection to Work Through Automation

Between scheduling meetings, coordinating projects, managing priorities, and other administrative tasks, many employees today can feel like significant time is spent supporting work, rather than actually being productive. While the workplace experience has become more seamless and engaging as a result of innovative, mobile collaboration tools, it doesn’t yet solve for the repetitive duties which keep work flowing. As next-gen, intelligent platforms develop, however, this is soon to change.

As the Fourth Industrial Revolution continues to unfold, one of the most hotly debated topics is the role of automation and artificial intelligence in the future of work. Experts estimate that robots and automation will eliminate more than 800 million jobs by 2030, stoking fears of an impending “workplace apocalypse.” Employees themselves, however, are cautiously optimistic. According to Workforce Futures: the role of people in the future of work, today’s workforce sees an incredible opportunity through the integration of automation and AI within the workplace. In fact, 58 percent welcome automation as a way to eliminate the administrative and repetitive tasks that take up so much of the workday. Here’s a snapshot of how the modern views automation:

  • 58% of workers believe automation will free them up for more interesting work
  • 66% of workers aren’t worried about the impact of automation on their jobs
  • 63% of workers aren’t worried that automation will harm their business
  • 40% of workers are already seeing AI play a role in the daily operations of their company

Today’s employees are veterans of massive workplace transformation. Baby boomers have watched first hand as the office transitioned from paper-based communications and early computers to complete digital collaboration. What’s driving this positive attitude is the resounding benefits technology has on enriching one’s connection the workplace experience. Chat and video functionality made it easier to connect with colleagues from around the world. Mobile tools are enabling greater work life balance. As far as employees are concerned, automation is simply the next iteration of workplace technology that is building a more engaging and productive workplace.

While the proliferation of virtual assistants is still on the horizon, the optimistic attitudes employees have around automation indicate a positive future. With these higher comfort levels, employees are ready to embrace the emerging technologies to support greater productivity. Through automation, and whatever comes next, employees are undoubtedly ready for the future of work.
