Workforce Futures: Defining a Vision for the Future of Work

Few technologies have kickstarted global workplace transformation like the smart phone. Rivals include the printing press or the desktop computer, but we as employees in the 21st century are watching the next wave of workforce advancement – hinging on a mobile-first culture and greater flexibility – unfold before our eyes. So profound is this impact, that it’s redefining employees’ entire relationship with their employers, and what work means to them. To fully understand the extent of these changes, Fuze polled over 6,600 employees from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Spain, the UK, and the United States for its latest research report, “Workforce Futures: The role of people in the future of work.”


Workforce Futures, revealed today, uncovers just how much employees are prioritizing flexibility as they strive for work-life balance. In fact, the study found that 54 percent of workers would leave their job for a new opportunity if it offered greater flexibility – 18 percent would go so far as to take a pay cut or a demotion. As businesses look to attract and retain top-tier talent and foster greater engagement from current staff, building a culture of flexibility is clearly very critical to stay competitive.


The research also indicates that the traditional structure of the 9-5 workday is no longer seen as necessary to be productive. Employees pointed to a range of attractive, flexible alternatives, with 69 percent opting for compressed hours (working their contracted hours over fewer days) and 57 percent stating said they would prefer a job with no set hours at all. While the immediate abandonment of today’s workday may not be feasible, understanding where priorities lie and acting as a partner to achieve these goals will yield significant long-term benefits.


In particular, Fuze found four trends shaping the future of work:

·      Work is Fluid: the majority of workers are willing to make sacrifices if it means gaining flexibility

·      Work is Open: the rise of mobile technology is untethering employees from workplace constraints, creating a new appetite for jobs that are unbound by the traditional workday

·      Work is Balanced: technology has blurred the lines between the personal and the professional, and workers are looking for career opportunities that give them time to pursue their passions rather than take it away

·      Work is Personal: as AI and automation become more mainstream, employees are optimistic about what this means for their personal productivity and working on more interesting work


Work is no longer somewhere one goes, it’s something someone does. Rather than dictate productivity, employees are looking for technology to help them succeed on their own terms.
